Kutumba was established in 1991, to provide an integrated foster care program for destitute disabled girls. 'Kutumba' is derived from the sanskrit word meaning a joint family living together under one roof. Kutumba provides a home for these children, who we feel have been rejected twice, first by their families and then by society. The needs of children who are differently abled [a preferred term rather than disabled] are unique. While institutions are able to provide training and other facilities to enable them to cope with day-to-day activities, their emotional needs tend to be overlooked. Ideally these children should be in the care of loving families who provide emotional well being to a child who otherwise faces discrimination from a cruel and indifferent world, where people are judged on their abilities, and rejected for their disabilities.
