The school La Joya is located in the city of Otavalo, Ecuador. 9 teachers, 1 social worker and 2 therapeutics are working with approximately 60 children between 3 and 10 years. All of them have strong disabilities, physically or mentally. The aim of La Joya is to give the children the possibility to learn something and not only stay at home. Besides, they get therapies and their movements will get better. Many of the children need special and individual help and because of this La Joya is working with volunteers who can support.
During the weekdays you probably will live with a local family in Otavalo. They will integrate you into their daily life and show you their culture. Some of the families live in very basic conditions, sometimes without hot water. But on the weekends it´s possible to stay in the volunteer department of the “Fundación Cielo Azul” where you can take a shower and use the WIFI. There you can also meet the other volunteers, who are working in other projects. Besides, every Friday afternoon we will have a meeting with all volunteers of Cielo Azul
The Project is a school in the rural surrounding of Otavalo. In the afternoon they offer different workshops. Depending on the volunteers’ skills, s/he can participate there too. The school has 162 students and classes with about 20 students.
The director and the teachers in La Joya are very open-minded for every type of help. They don´t have special requirements for future volunteers. It would be good if you have basic Spanish skills yet, but the kids always will understand you. If you have experience in working with disabled children, it would be great. But what we most need are people who are motivated, patient with the kids and who can see where help is needed.
