The Abcede Memorial Library Foundation is located in a small village in Lucena City, Quezon. Nearby are poor residents who are mostly migrants from all over the country and most of the women are housewives. Moreover, majority of the adults are elementary graduates and the average number of members in a household is around five to eight. As much as children in the area want to get higher education, elementary and secondary schools are far off from the sitio. Despite tuition fees to content with, poor families still confront the basic issues on transportation and food allowance of their children. The Foundation aims to realize a self-sustaining children’s Information Center that is volunteer-driven and community-led, to involve the community in the promotion of love for reading books with children and to serve as resource center for students and teachers, youth and adults; individuals and organizations interested in the library’s endeavors.

Activities:

In coordination with the Head of the Foundation and Program Development Staff, the volunteer will be task to assist in the setting-up community libraries, increasing teaching effectiveness to disadvantaged children, empowering the tomorrow’s leaders through different non-formal education and leadership activities. 


Requirement:

Abcede Foundation work closely with the Provincial Government of Quezon in partnership with a number of local public schools and communities around the province. The volunteer may be assigned outside Lucena City when interested, capable and necessary.  The volunteer should be psychologically and physically prepared to work mostly in the field and flexible to work with children and youth. Academic and or work experience in library management/teaching preschool or elementary students are the foundation's preferred volunteers.

 

Participants may bring their local food (Snacks/drink), educational supplies and art materials and used educational books if possible to be used and distributed to local children. They may bring sports equipment too to support the sports development program in specific communities. 

 

The project is open year round and accepts volunteers anytime it is available for the three to five months program. For six months to 12 months it is open only during August and February. The host family can only accept maximum of two same sex volunteers at a time. Male volunteers will be accepted only when there is no female volunteer working in the project.
